Competency 9: Internet

http://www.readingrockets.org/

Reading Rockets is a national multimedia project offering information and resources on how young kids learn to read, why so many struggle, and how caring adults can help.

The Reading Rockets project is comprised of PBS television programs, available on videotape and DVD; online services, including the web sites ReadingRockets.org and ColorinColorado.org; and professional development opportunities. Reading Rockets is an educational initiative of WETA, the flagship public television and radio station in the nation's capital, and is funded by a major grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs.

This website provides strategies to help kids who struggle with reading, techniques for teaching reading, and great kid’s books and authors. Research articles on the top of struggling readers.

Competency 8: Images

Personality Types In the School Library

This image comes from the Librarian Sisters website, Karen Woodworth-Roman, a former MLS student who wrote a paper which looks at how personality types affect children’s learning styles and choice of reading materials. This could aid in suggesting books to students that have characters with similar or contrasting personality types. Since, my topic is motivating reluctant readers this could be a different avenue to reach reluctant readers. This would definitely be a tool that could aid in helping students explore different types of books.

I located this picture using Google Images using the search term: school library and reluctant readers

Competency 7: Research Visual/Multimedia

A graph from U.S. Department of Education, NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) for Education Statistics was included because it shows how significant reading for fun is for student achievement. There is statistical research that shows that motivating reluctant readers to read for pleasure will assist in improvement in student achievement.

Competency 6d: Citation Pearl

Database: WorldCat
Search Query: Reaching Reluctant Young Adult Readers: A Handbook for Librarians and Teachers by Edward T. Sullivan

Descriptors:
Preteens -- Books and reading -- United States. Teenagers -- Books and reading -- United States. Reading (Middle school) -- United States. Reading promotion -- United States. Children's literature -- Bibliography. Young adult literature -- Bibliography.

2.Best books for middle school and junior high readers : grades 6-9 / Author: Gillespie, John Thomas, 1928-; Barr, Catherine, Publication: Westport, Conn. : Libraries Unlimited, 2004
Document: English : Book Libraries Worldwide: 757

Reflection: I found a book for reaching reluctant readers from the ages of 10 -15 years old which was still within my topic area. From the subject descriptors I chose preteens which had 29 hits. I think the subject descriptor lead me to books that were more on topic than the originial book (Naked Reading: uncovering what tweens need to become lifelong readers and Books that don't bore 'em which were all in the top 10 results).

Competency 6c: Successive Fractions

Search Query: school library and the reluctant reader

Database: LexisNexis
S1 = reluctant readers - 998 hits
S2 = school library - 998 hits
S1 and S2 - 17 hits

First 2 results:
1.
Want to be stylish? Grab a good bookThe Western Mail, March 8, 2007, Thursday, NEWS; Pg. 20, 584 words, Abbie Wightwick Western Mail

2.
Never ending storiesThe Age (Melbourne, Australia), October 23, 2008 Thursday, METRO; Life & Times; Pg. 18, 782 words, Annie Lawson

Reflection: I was surprised that S1 and S2 separately had the same number of hits 998 and relieved that after deciding to do a Successive Fraction search after the specific facet my results were more manageable with 17 hits. The 17 results had several articles focused on drawing in the reluctant reader from making reading fun to actively involving the reluctant reader in the process of selection.

Competency 6b: Specific Facet

Search Query: school library and the reluctant reader

Database: Library Lit and Info.
Search:
school library reluctant readers = 44 hits
school libraryand reluctant readers = 53 hits
reluctant readers = 206 hits

Reflection:
I started my search with the main facet "reluctant readers" which resulted to many hits (206)After narrowing my specific facet search I still had more than 30 hits but I decided to stop here and do a successive fractions search even though the hits seemed helpful it was to many to sort through.

Competency 6a: Building Block Search

Database: ERIC FirstSearch

Search Strategy:

S1 = struggling readers or reluctant readers
S2 = library or school library media center
S3 = encourage or motivate
S1 and S2 and S3 = 7 hits

Actual Strategy: (kw: struggling reader or kw: reluctant readers) and (kw: library or kw: school library media center) and (kw: motivate or kw: encourage).

Reflection: The building block strategy is a helpful search tool was you identify the synonyms that will be most helpful in your search. My first search using only general terms created 59 hits but the hits were not relevant to my topic. I changed my search words and received fewer hits but the hits were very relevant to my topic. I believe in this particular search less is more, out of the 7 hits only 1 hit was not helpful.

Competency 5: Tagging/Indexing

Here is the tag cloud for the book What Really Matters for Struggling Readers: Designing Research-Based Programs by Richard L. Allington.:

372.43(1) Curriculum Resources(1) desk room(1) Education(3) instruction(1) Instructional Materials(1) Language Arts(1) Literacy(2) prof. reading(1) Professional book(1) reading(5) Reading Instruction(1) reading remediation(1) research(1) struggling readers(2) teacher resource(1) teaching(1) teaching education reading literacy(1)

I selected this book for my blog because it provides research and practices that teachers can use to develop methods for helping children with reading difficulties, sometimes reluctant readers are struggling readers. The key is getting adolescents to read. Reading is a common tag (5) users agree.
